Aspart of the implementation of the EFFUSE-win project, second-year students of the Faculty of Biology of UzhNU visited the Comprehensive Laboratory for Monitoring Environmental Pollution.
During the excursion, the students got acquainted with the work of the laboratory for monitoring surface waters by biological indicators. The specialists spoke about the objects of observation – macrozoobenthos, phytoplankton, macrophytes and microphytobenthos – and their role in assessing the ecological state of water bodies and the level of anthropogenic load. The results of such studies are important for the management of aquatic ecosystems and the development of environmental protection measures.
The excursion became an example of practice-oriented learning: the students saw how theoretical knowledge is applied in real research, got acquainted with modern methods of environmental monitoring and realized the importance of science for sustainable development.
During practical work, they identified indicator species in water samples. They found out that larvae of bell mosquitoes and small bristle worms indicate organic pollution, while larvae of freckles occur only in clean, oxygen-rich waters. Diatoms, which are sensitive to changes in chemical composition, are also reliable bioindicators. Such activities contribute to the development of scientific thinking and environmental awareness among young people.
