The interactive workshop introduced students and clients of DSS Anima to the importance of exotic species in teaching, research, and the popularization of science.
On 14 November 2025, as part of the Week of Science and Technology, a workshop entitled “Exotic Animals in Education and Research” was held at Ľudovít Štúr Grammar School in Michalovce, implemented as an activity within the EFFUSE-win project.
The workshop focused on presenting the importance of keeping and studying exotic animals in pedagogical practice and scientific research. Participants were introduced to the biological characteristics of selected species, their ecological requirements, and the ways in which they can be used in education, science communication, and experimental work.
An essential component of the workshop was an interactive demonstration of live animals, during which participants had the opportunity to observe and safely handle various species of exotic insects, millipedes, spiders, scorpions, and snakes. This direct contact enabled students and other attendees to better understand the morphology, behaviour, and ecological significance of these organisms in natural ecosystems.
The activity was attended by three groups of students from the four-year and eight-year grammar school programmes, with content adapted to their knowledge level and interests. The fourth group consisted of clients from the Anima Social Services Home in Michalovce, which provides services to individuals with disabilities. Thanks to a special pedagogical and individualized approach, these young adults with disabilities were also able to experience a safe, enriching, and engaging interaction with the presented animals, resulting in a unique educational experience.
The workshop contributed to the popularization of biology and zoology, increased interest in the natural sciences, and strengthened the connection between schools, experts, and the broader public. The activity also supported an inclusive approach to education, fully aligned with the objectives of the EFFUSE-win project.
