University Without Borders

Students of the summer “University Without Borders” discovered the fascinating world of model animals and their importance for science and education.

On July 10, 2025, as part of the annually organized summer program University Without Borders at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice for upper primary school students, a workshop titled “Model Animals in Science and Education” was held. The workshop was led by Dr. Igor Majláth, with assistance from Dr. V. Majláthová and Dr. M. Kolesárová.

During the workshop, students were introduced to various animal species used as model organisms in scientific research and education. They had the chance to see and touch cockroaches, stick insects, spiders, scorpions, a turtle, lizards, and snakes. Through direct interaction with these animals, they learned about their importance for science, their biological characteristics, and their ecological roles.

The workshop was held in four sessions so that all groups of children participating in the summer university could attend (a total of 52 students). It offered a unique experience and helped stimulate students’ interest in the natural sciences, which is one of the main goals of the EFFUSE-win project.
